Reception with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar

Carlow County Development Partnership was invited to a Reception with the Taoiseach, Mr. Leo Varadkar T.D. in the State Apartments, Dublin Castle on Tuesday 17th April. The emergency response strand of Carlow County Development’s weekly Care and Repair Service was acknowledged for their work in response to Storms Ophelia and Emma.

As part of the emergency response strand of the service, the Care and Repair team telephoned older people to make sure they were fully prepared for the storms, gave them advice and a comforting word of reassurance and ensured that they knew that all would be well. A key aspect of the Care and Repair service is our links to other services on the ground and we are in regular contact with the Gardaí, Public Health Nurse, St Vincent De Paul and local community groups.

Mary Walsh, CEO of Carlow County Development Partnership CLG ‘We are delighted that the Taoiseach has recognised the work of our Care and Repair service, especially during Storm Ophelia.  It is very rewarding for the team that their work, which they do with a spring in their step, has been recognised at national level.’

Martina Jordan – front line service for Care and Repair.  ‘It didn’t cause us a second thought to ring our Care and Repair clients. They are our friends. We let them know that all would be ok. Many people were fearful if and how the ‘beast from the east’ would harm them or damage their property and welcomed a call from us’

Carlow County Development Partnership CLG introduced the Care and Repair Service in 2013 and it has grown from strength to strength with over 300 clients at present.

The vision of the Carlow Care and Repair programme is to enable older people to remain in their own homes, in their own communities, living as independently as possible, through the improvement of their housing conditions and their level of comfort, security and well-being.

The Care and Repair Service is a non-fee paying voluntary service which offers support to older members of the Carlow Community in two ways. Firstly it offers support through its “Care” side, which consists of a regular phone call to see how a person is doing and to see how we can be of assistance. Secondly, through the Repair side, it offers a practical and minor repairs service free of charge, such as changing a lock or fixing a plug.

The Care and Repair service also provides and fits carbon monoxide alarms and smoke alarms in the home of the elderly person.

Older people or relatives of older people, living in their home in Carlow who may benefit from our Care and Repair service should contact Niamh at 059-9720733  for more information or visit
